How you feel about The Disaster Artist may hinge greatly on your desire to keep watching James Franco movies, in light of various accusations of inappropriate behavior that began surfacing around awards season last year. But if you're a fan of the strange cult film called The Room to any extent, the commentary track is a must-have. Contrary to the public promotion of Franco and bizarre midnight-movie auteur Tommy Wiseau as best pals on TV talk shows, the tension between them really emerges on the alternate audio (featuring Franco, his cowriters, and Wiseau pal Greg Sestero), as Wiseau defensively bristles at any suggestion that people might be laughing at -- rather than with -- any aspect of his disasterpiece, becoming outright hostile at several points. Considering how carefully guarded most commentary tracks are, it's a rare look at the fraying seams that were kept well-hidden by the initial hype machine.

The only thing that would have been even more compelling is if Wiseau had actually fired back by challenging Franco on his alleged bad behavior in retaliation.

10. Thor: Ragnarok (Worldwide gross $846 million, home sales $66 million)

Only the second of the Disney Marvel Studios movies to get a 4K release (if you count Spider-Man: Homecoming as Sony, and The Incredible Hulk as Universal, which they are), the most colorful in both visuals and story made the most of the format, with hilarious commentary by director Taika Waititi and his toddler daughter, and copious extras including 8-bit video game-style storyboards and a short in which Jeff Goldblum's all-powerful Grand Master moves in with Thor's old roommate and ends up liquidating most of his friends. Black Panther got similarly grand treatment, but Waititi is a much more compelling talker than Ryan Coogler, and his semi-sarcastic stream-of-consciousness is one you're likely to revisit more than once.

Also, Ragnarok really is top-tier Marvel. Anyone who cribs from 1980's Flash Gordon, which might just be my favorite rewatchable flick of all time, had better do it right. Waititi did.

9. Small Town Crime (Box office reported as $0, home sales $145,751)

In the Blu-ray review game, thrillers with generic titles that show you a couple of recognizable actors wielding guns on the cover are more than a dime a dozen; a nickel a million, maybe? Most are worth barely more than what I pay for them (nothing), but the Nelms brothers' tale of a functional alcoholic ex-cop who's still really good at solving mysteries is on a par with any number of the usual heist and/or noir movies that serve as Oscar dark horses each year, like Destroyer or Hell or High Water. Plus it includes a whopping three commentaries, deleted scenes, and extras so comprehensive that you'll know every aspect of how it was made if you indulge in them all. John Hawkes is a standout in the lead, as is Anthony Anderson in a dramatic role as his brother-in-law, and Robert Forster as one vengeful grandpa.

8. Ready Player One in 4K (Worldwide gross $578 million, home sales $25.8 million)

You don't have to love self-aggrandizing nostalgia-miner Ernest Cline to appreciate what Steven Spielberg crafted from his '80s pop-culture checklist novel. With a truly heartbreaking performance by Mark Rylance as a gifted inventor who created a world from all the pop culture he adored but was too scared to ever take a chance on love before he died, Spielberg affirms fandom as a positive but also calls it out when it gets in the way of what matters most. In a modern day take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it isn't about the boy who gets everything he ever wanted; it's about the boy figuring out that what he really needed was adjacent to it, and he has the power to give it to everyone else as well.

You may or may not care for the Cline-heavy extras, but I defy any cinephile not to smile when the Kubrick family visits the virtual set on which Spielberg is re-creating The Shining. And with its pixel-perfect imagery, Ready Player One is the best disc this year to truly show off your 4K system and what it can do.

7. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (Worldwide gross $1.3 billion, home sales $85 million)

This isn't about whether you hated the movie or not, and for the record, I'm mostly annoyed that a loud segment of people with small-minded prejudices has hijacked the debate to make it about race and gender, when the movie's problems, such as they are, are more cinematic than that.

But TLJ doesn't make this list primarily on the movie's merits. It makes it because it's a rare Star Wars movie where the supplements don't feel like a tightly managed bit of PR rear-end-covering. Lacking J.J. Abrams' penchant for secrecy, or the spin-off directors' penchants for messing up and having to have half their movie re-shot, writer-director Rian Johnson speaks freely on the commentary track and numerous featurettes in a way no recent Star Wars director has, even to the point of explaining why certain scenes were deleted, and decisions made.

Yes, the movie is basically a rip-off of the original Battlestar Galactica pilot (rag-tag fleet on the run takes a side-trip to a casino planet with a dark underbelly, then defeats the bad guys using an elaborate decoy), which itself was accused at the time of being a rip-off of Star Wars. But the level of extras it includes, up to and including a version of the film with score-only soundtrack, sets a standard I hope every subsequent Star Wars movie's home release can meet.

McDonald's employees may not agree, as their corporate HQ tried to cash in on a misunderstood reference to a discontinued sauce, woefully underestimating demand..but real-world side-effects aside, Rick and Morty remains one of the smartest, darkest science fiction shows in the air. From pickle transformations to childhood imaginary friends gone bad, it's a cartoon that depicts tremendously dysfunctional people dealing with deep-seated issues across multiple realities and universe-threatening paradoxes. Rick Sanchez is often mistaken for a role model by the wrong people, but he's a wonderful embodiment of the depression and existential angst felt by people who literally are the smartest in the room and maybe wish they weren't.

The Blu-ray set features animatics, featurettes, commentaries, documentaries, and even weird special guest stars like Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love weighing in. It's hard to imagine any possible other elements that could have been added..except from other dimensions.

5. True Stories (Domestic box office $2.5 million, home sales currently unknown)

Without True Stories, there might be no Big Lebowski or Twin Peaks -- and Radiohead would have named themselves something else. Before the Coen brothers and David Lynch really hit their stride, Talking Heads frontman David Byrne's one and only feature directorial effort examined small-town America and its attendant music as a collection of eccentrics free to let their freak flags fly alongside the stars and stripes, and just as proudly, so long as they don't hurt anybody. Its sense of how strange supposed normalcy actually is has informed Lynch's work; its wacky caricatures (one of them played by John Goodman in his first lead role) became a staple of Coen films. Its soundtrack, brought together in complete form at last on CD, is out of this world.

Criterion has dug up some amazing vintage extras to tell the behind-the-scenes tales, proving that along with Byrne, they are the true dream operators.

4. Deadpool 2 (Worldwide gross $737.7 million, home sales $46.8 million)

Unrated extended editions are a common sales gimmick that Ryan 'Van Wilder' Reynolds is well and truly familiar with, but the Deadpool star/cowriter went above and beyond to help create an entire alternate cut of his hit sequel. It not only adds new jokes and more violence, but it also changes music cues and pacing, while providing more backstory and actively changing the tone to a more broadly comedic one overall. It's a shame they're clearly going for a double-dip with the new PG-13 Christmas version, but it's great that you don't have to choose between the mature-viewer cuts, which are equally as good as one another.

3. American Psycho in 4K (Worldwide gross $34 million, home sales unknown)

The best 4K upgrade I saw all year, American Psycho looks better than it ever did in the theaters, and plays a whole lot stronger now than it did in the final year of the Clinton administration. Now that the country is actually run by a character straight out of the '80s yuppie scene, who, like the movie's Patrick Bateman, could probably flat out confess to multiple crimes and not lose any support, the satire feels a lot more pointed. And director Mary Harron feels super-prescient, though she doesn't really get into that on the new commentary track.

It feels like this movie was warning us about predatory male privilege years before we listened; what was presented as cult horror at the time is now wry commentary. That Christian Bale would go on to play both Bruce Wayne and Dick Cheney seems somehow fitting.

2. The Incredibles 2 (Worldwide gross $1.2 billion, home sales not yet available)

Most of the time, animated features aimed at kids skew their Blu-ray extras toward youngsters as well, but while The Incredibles 2 does some of that, it's more concerned with letting the animators speak. Through extensive conversations and commentaries, many of the disparate creatives who worked on the movie describe their different roles and how their own lives helped shape their contributions, with Brad Bird emerging as the singular auteur behind it all.

The film isn't as great as the original, and the digital copy provided with my 4K disc was not in 4K itself, so cheap move there, Pixar. But the fully loaded disc is as much an education in animation as any commercial cartoon movie release is likely to enable.
